The Research Bureau is a nonprofit, member-supported research organization established in 1932 to study Boston's fiscal, management and administrative problems. Independent and non-partisan, the Research Bureau provides in-depth, objective research and analysis in an effort to promote more efficient, economical and responsible government for Boston. The Research Bureau's continuous presence and credibility enables it to play a strong role in shaping the direction of Boston's public policy over a wide range of city and school issues. More than just a research organization, the Research Bureau has become a respected and powerful force for constructive change in Boston. The Research Bureau operates with a full-time staff of five and a Board of Directors made up of Boston's prominent business, professional and civic leaders, representing the diversity of interests in the City.

Research Bureau research, reports and recommendations have shaped major policies and led to new laws and important management improvements that benefit Boston now and into the future. The Research Bureau provides a clear and independent voice to help the Boston community understand complex issues important to its future. In recent years, a few of the significant issues in which the Research Bureau played a critical role include the creation of the appointed School Committee, the creation of Boston Medical Center, the authorization of the convention center in legislation that protects Boston's financial position and restructuring the Living Wage ordinance. On occasion, when difficult and sensitive policy issues arise, we will present the facts and speak out when it is in the best interest of the City to do so. The Research Bureau's work ultimately promotes an improved, healthier residential and business climate in Boston.

The Research Bureau also sponsors the Henry L. Shattuck Public Service Awards each year to recognize city employees for their outstanding service to Boston. The Shattuck City Champion Awards honor a business leader and a nonprofit leader for their long-standing contributions to the Boston community.
