Mayor to Appoint Two School Committee Members

Terms of two Members will expire and both can be reappointed

The School Committee Nominating Panel held its first meeting on October 4th to begin the process of submitting names of candidates to Mayor Walsh for his appointment to the School Committee for the seats now held by Hardin Coleman and Michael Loconto whose terms expire on January 1, 2018.  Both members may reapply for another four-year term.  The Panel is required to submit its recommendations to the Mayor no later than December 4, 2017.  The Mayor must make his appointments by January 1, 2018.

Serving on the School Committee provides the opportunity to make a difference in the lives and education of thousands of students in the Boston Public Schools.  In the next few years, the School Committee will address issues of improving student achievement, teacher quality, turnaround of underperforming schools, transportation and the BPS’ 10-year master facilities plan.

Application Requirements
Applicants must be residents of Boston, and the application asks for basic information about the candidate and written responses to a series of questions. Interested applicants can download the application form here or request a form by emailing scnominatingpanel@boston.gov

Applications can be submitted by email to scnominatingpanel@boston.gov, faxed to 617-635-2950 or delivered to Room 612 at City Hall, and must be received by 5:00 P.M on Monday, November 13, 2017.

Nominating Panel
The Nominating Panel is composed of thirteen members with nine being designees of parent organizations, school unions, the business community, a college or university president and the Commissioner of Education or his designee.  The remaining four members are appointed by the Mayor.

The Nominating Panel must submit at least three names, but no more than five names, for each seat, and the Mayor must select one of the individuals in each group.

Boston School Committee
The Boston School Committee consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor to staggered four-year terms.  Mayor Walsh has appointed all seven School Committee members.
