Two Seats Open on the Boston School Committee

Want to play a key role in the future of Boston Public Schools? Two Boston School Committee members’ terms are set to expire in January 2023, opening the door to new interested Bostonians to serve on the governing body for the Boston Public Schools (BPS). Those who are interested in playing an essential role in the BPS by setting the education policy agenda, establishing and monitoring a $1.3B budget, and holding the Superintendent accountable are encouraged to apply here by November 22nd. New members will serve a four-year term and all applicants must be a resident of Boston to qualify.

The School Committee has seven members and one non-voting student representative. It meets approximately twice a month to learn more about and adopt policies and grants that support student achievement. Serving on the School Committee is a significant commitment that requires time to prepare for biweekly meetings, connect with BPS leaders, and attend late-evening meetings. However, being a member of the School Committee is a unique and fulfilling opportunity to advocate for BPS students, families, and educators.

The application consists of questions related to the applicant’s interest, experience, and knowledge of what is entailed for serving on the School Committee, as well as their understanding of BPS’s most pressing issues, such as ensuring access to high-quality schools for every student in the district and creating a healthy learning environment for everyone. Applicants will be vetted and publicly interviewed by the Citizens Nominating Panel, a 13-member panel of various educational backgrounds—from parents to business leaders. Interviews for selected candidates will be held on the week of November 28th through a hybrid format of in-person and virtual options.

The Nominating Panel must present three to five people per vacancy to the Mayor by December 5th, and she must select her appointments from this list of names by December 22nd. During her time as mayor, Mayor Wu appointed four members to the School Committee, two new members and two reappointments from the previous administration.  For a current list of School Committee Members click here.

Please direct all questions and submit completed applications to scnominatingpanel@boston.gov or mail/deliver to Room 603 of Boston City Hall.
