It’s not a secret that nearly half of Boston’s land area is tax-exempt. What does not get as much attention is that government owns over three-quarters of all exempt land in Boston at 78.7% of the total – with the Commonwealth holding the largest portion at 48%.

Boston’s legacy costs ranked second lowest as a % of spending among 32 U.S. cities. There are many factors that come into play and having a low % is not necessarily good.
